Apprentices work towards a number of qualifications, called a “Framework”, usually including an NVQ Level 2, a Technical Certificate, at least two Key Skills and Employment Rights & Responsibilities. Some frameworks also have additional skills tests.

The Apprenticeship Framework for Bricklaying has the following qualifications –

- NVQ Trowel Occupations – Bricklayer – Level 2

  • Unit VR01 Conform to general workplace safety
  • Unit VR02 Conform to efficient work practices
  • Unit VR03 Move and handle resources
  • Unit VR40 Erect masonry structures
  • Unit VR41 Set out masonry structures
  • Unit VR44 Erect thin joint masonry structures

- Intermediate Construction Award – Trowel Occupations – Bricklaying Route 100/1254/0

NB This qualification is due for updating by the end of 2006

  • Unit ICA 100 Store Materials and Equipment
  • Unit ICA 101 Erect and Dismantle Basic Working Platforms
  • Unit ICA 102 Work Efficiently
  • Unit ICA 103 Brick and Blockwork Walling
  • Unit ICA 104 Set Out Basic Buildings
  • Unit ICA 105 Construct Walling Detail
  • Unit ICA 106 Signalling for the Movement of Loads
