Carpenters can be involved with the building process from start to finish. Often carpenters specialise in one particular area – for example, they may be specialists in fitting joists, roofing and stud partitioning (first fix) or hanging doors, door frames (architraves) and window frames (second fix).

Some Carpenters construct the timber frames used in many buildings (carcassing); others may build the roof or fit the staircase. Another carpenter may be responsible for fitting skirting boards or installing the kitchen.

Joiners also work with timber in a workshop, where they might make bespoke window frames and doors using specialist woodworking machines. Joiners also make specialist staircases and fitted furniture.
