Matthew M.

Matt lives in Knowle and went to Hartcliffe School. He originally applied to On-Site Bristol to be an electrical apprentice, but when he failed the electrical entrance test he decided to try carpentry instead. He started his training in July 2003 and was employed from the start, but did his first year as a full-time student at City of Bristol College. He progressed onto an Apprenticeship in September 2004, completing his framework a little later than expected in early 2006.

Matt surpassed all our expectations and achieved his Advanced Apprenticeship on time, first time, in July 2006. Matthew initially struggled with Key Skills but after some extra work at home achieved both the portfolio and test elements to complete his Framework. Matthew also produced some work of an excellent standard in College and at work showing a good attendance rate and the drive to complete his Advanced Apprenticeship.

Austen S.

Austen lives in Longwell Green, but works for a small firm based in central Bristol. He attended Kingsfield School, and wanted to follow his father into construction as a carpenter. Austen had already found an employer by the time he came to his interview with On-Site Bristol, and he started his Apprenticeship in September 2004.

Austen achieved something that no other apprentice at On-Site Bristol or City of Bristol College has achieved. Austen completed his Apprenticeship in not one but two Frameworks. Austen successfully achieved both the Site Carpentry Apprenticeship and the Bench Joinery Apprenticeship in the two years usually allocated to just one of these.

Austen’s employer encouraged him to pursue both apprenticeships even though its business concentrated on Bench Joinery. This meant loaning Austen out to another contractor so that Austen could complete his site carpentry evidence. Austen duly completed both frameworks and is now attending his third year in order to complete his Advanced Apprenticeship

Austen was awarded “Best in Trade – Carpentry & Joinery” at the on-Site Bristol Awards Ceremony in October 2006, winning himself an engraved trophy, framed certificate and £100 in tools vouchers.
