As well as using On Site Bristol’s Apprentice Recruitment Service, you can recruit your own apprentice and refer them to us.

If you want to do this, it would be a good idea to talk to us first, so that the recruitment and selection can go smoothly. The main things to take into account are –

  • the ability of your recruit to cope with the training involved
  • the age of your recruit
  • the type of training your recruit will need

Ability – On Site Bristol will need to assess your recruit, using one of our usual entrance tests. This is to ensure that they will be able to cope with the off-the-job training involved in their apprenticeship, and will also enable you to access any ConstructionSkills grant that might be available.

As soon as you have an idea of who you might want to recruit as an apprentice, please contact us to arrange testing. If you are recruiting for an apprentice in Electrical Installation or Plumbing, it may not be necessary for them to be tested if they already have their GCSE results. Electrical Installation Apprentices need Maths, English and Science at a minimum of grade D or above. Plumbing Apprentices need to have GCSE’s (grade C or above) in Maths and English.

Age – recent Age Discrimination legislation prohibits discrimination on the basis of age in employing apprentices. However, the funding of Apprenticeships is exempt from this legislation, as Government funding continues to be targeted at young people below the age of 19.

This means that recruiting an apprentice over the age of 19 (at the start date of their apprenticeship) will need a financial contribution from you or the apprentice towards the cost of their training. The size of this financial contribution will vary according to the actual age of your recruit and other factors, so you should contact On Site Bristol for details relating to each individual.

Type of Training – On Site Bristol normally runs apprenticeships in six main trades – bricklaying, carpentry & joinery, electrical installation, painting & decorating, plastering and plumbing – but we may also be able to arrange other training such as Train to Gain as required

If you would like to recruit an apprentice for a trade other than those listed above, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can try to meet your requirements.
